About Tochi
Tochi is a Melbourne-based architecture and energy assessment workshop run by Jeremy Wells, a registered architect and qualified Home Energy Efficiency and Sustainability Assessor with a passion for re-imagining existing spaces and materials. After working as a bicycle mechanic and solar panel installer, Jeremy started his architectural career at Light House Architecture & Science, an innovative firm designing highly efficient homes in Canberra’s challenging climate. Upon moving to Melbourne in 2017, Jeremy began working as a project manager for a home builder, where he widened his skills and knowledge to encompass cost-estimating, subcontractor management, materials procurement and hands-on carpentry. In 2020, Jeremy established Tochi Workshop so that he could combine his expertise in architecture, building and thermal performance modelling to help clients make the most of the space in their homes while lowering their energy use.
Tochi specialises in small, smart improvements to existing homes.
Why Tochi
Our mission is to help our clients build beautiful and enduring homes in a resourceful and environmentally friendly way.
What makes us unique
While we have a solid grounding in construction practicalities and environmental performance, we approach every project with creativity and an open mind. It is this lateral thinking that allows us to find holistic and novel solutions to complex problems, resulting in designs that respond beautifully to the unique context of the site and the goals and priorities of the people living in the home.
Resourceful
We work hard in the design phase to do more with less. We believe that creative modifications and attention to detail can make a huge difference to any home’s livability. An intimate knowledge of house construction supports us to make decisions that are practical and cost effective. Tochi’s designs achieve great functionality and a sense of space and airiness on a small footprint, resulting in homes that need fewer resources to build, operate and maintain.
Environmentally Friendly
Whether it’s creating better connections to the outdoor environment, optimising a home for energy-efficiency, or finding ways to re-use demolished materials, consideration for the natural environment is at the core of what we do. We understand that true sustainability is not just about solar panels and batteries, but about how a home interacts with the surrounding environment and community.
